  • Reformer Pilates vs Mat Pilates: Which is Best for You?

Reformer Pilates vs Mat Pilates: Which is Best for You?

Pilates is a system of exercise and body conditioning developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates, focusing on controlled movements, breathing, and core engagement to improve strength, flexibility, balance, and body awareness.

Today we would like to focus on Mat Pilates and Reformer Pilates as the biggest debate seems to be “Which one is better?”Reformer and Mat Pilates both offer different benefits, and the “best” choice depends on your fitness goals, experience level, and personal preferences. Reformer Pilates provides added resistance and support because of the spring tension, while Mat Pilates focuses on bodyweight exercises and core strength.

    Here’s a more detailed comparison:

    Reformer Pilates:

Reformer Pilates is a low-impact, mind-body workout that uses a specialized piece of equipment, the Pilates Reformer, to enhance strength, flexibility, and posture, targeting specific muscle groups with controlled movements and adjustable resistance.

    • Benefits:
      • Increased Resistance:The Reformer machine allows for added resistance through springs and pulleys, leading to a more challenging and effective workout.
      • Support and Stability:The machine provides a stable platform and can offer support for individuals with limited range of movement or injuries.
      • Variety and Modifications:The Reformer offers a wide range of exercises and modifications, making it suitable for various fitness levels and goals.
      • Bone and Joint Health:The resistance provided by the Reformer can offer benefits for bone and joint health.
      • Rehabilitation:Reformer Pilates can be particularly beneficial for rehabilitation and addressing muscle imbalances.

*NB*: While the Reformer can provide support, it’s important to have proper instruction and modifications to avoid injury and that is why you should train with a Pilates Instructor with a suitable qualification.

It would be such a pity to put yourself at the risk of someone who could injure you!

    Mat Pilates:

Mat Pilates is a strengthening and lengthening form of exercise that focuses on your core (trunk) muscles while also training your arms and legs. Mat Pilates is based on the original exercises that Joseph Pilates developed to strengthen his own body as a young man.

    • Benefits:
      • Bodyweight Focus:Mat Pilates emphasizes using your own body weight, promoting core strength and body awareness.
      • Low-Impact:Mat Pilates is generally lower-impact than Reformer Pilates, making it suitable for beginners and those with injuries.
      • Accessibility:Mat Pilates can be done anywhere with minimal equipment, making it convenient and affordable.
      • Improved Core Strength and Flexibility:Mat Pilates can help improve core strength, flexibility, and posture.

While Mat Pilates provides good benefits, sometimes the range of exercises and modifications may be more limited compared to Reformer Pilates.

Ultimately, the best choice depends on your individual needs and preferences. At Pilates Dynamics, we encourage our clients to do both types of Pilates as the benefits to both complement each other best.

Earlier in this blog, we mentioned the importance of making sure that your Instructor has suitable qualifications.Pilates is an exercise discipline that is based on anatomical and movement knowledge together with understanding in order to strengthen, mobilize and stretch the body to create balance in the body by not overtraining or undertraining muscles- and most importantly to do so in a safe manner.

  • Why Train with a Suitably Qualified Pilates Instructor?

Why Train with a Suitably Qualified Pilates Instructor?

Because you do not want to put yourself at the risk of someone who could injure you!

Whilst it may feel like they have your best interests at heart- and they probably do-but lack of knowledge and information will prevent them from having your best interests at heart.
Pilates is an exercise discipline that is based on anatomical and movement knowledge together with understanding in order to strengthen, mobilize and stretch the body to create balance in the body by not overtraining or undertraining muscles- and most importantly to do so in a safe manner.

Pilates is great to prevent discomfort, pain and injury and not to cause the aforesaid. You should leave your Pilates session feeling rejuvenated and knowing that your muscles have worked.

The demand for teachers is growing at a phenomenal rate which leads to teachers being trained in bigger numbers and this brings a risk of standards being compromised. It is therefore of utmost importance that educators of the method maintain standards by offering thorough training and education.

A qualified Instructor who has done their qualification through a credible institution makes all the difference between your body being in safe hands or not. The instructors are able to work with and in accordance with your goals and expectations and they will guide you safely towards your end goals.

These Courses are ideal for Physiotherapists, Biokineticists, Occupational Therapists, Dancers, Personal Trainers, Exercise Specialists and Fitness Specialists and even people with a Corporate position who wants to change careers – as long as your passion is exercise and fitness.
How do I become a Reformer Pilates instructor in South Africa?
The first thing you need to do is to find a reputable studio that does not offer you watered down or condensed Pilates Courses. We have had students come into our studio wanting to do the Intensive Reformer Course but then they realize that their Mat Qualification has left them with little to no confidence in their teaching skills as Pilates Instructors.
How do you become a Pilates reformer trainer?
After having done your Pilates Mat course lectures, you can continue with your Pilates Reformer lectures at Pilates Dynamics so that you can obtain your Pilates Reformer qualification. Should you already be in possession of a Pilates Mat Course qualification, you can sign up for our Intensive Pilates Reformer course. Once you have completed your lectures, you will start with your Pilates Reformer practical training hours. The Pilates Reformer course practical hours are made up of client training, personal practice, and observation hours.
We understand that sometimes not everyone wants to learn in a group, or maybe your time schedule simply does not align with our group lecture dates, therefore you can also do this course on a private (one-on-one) basis and do the lectures at times and on days that suits you. You can contact Pilates Dynamics for more information on how to schedule private lecture hours for your Pilates Reformer Course.
How long does it take to become a reformer Pilates instructor?
Pilates Dynamics gives you a full calendar year to finish your course from your starting date. If you are part of a Pilates Reformer Group Course and you decide to finish your course a lot earlier than the rest of the group, you can elect to write your exams at any time, subject to availability of examiners at Pilates Dynamics.
Why not do a shorter course or maybe an online Pilates course?
No, No, No. Do not do yourself a dis-service. You do not want to spend your valuable time and money to engage in an online Pilates course or on a condensed Pilate course, only to find out afterwards when you apply for a Pilates Instructor, or you attempt to start you own studio – that you do not know enough to train Pilates.
The hazards of doing a short Pilates course or a condensed Pilates course or an online Pilate course are a plenty. With the shorter and less in-depth courses there is quite often less time available to be thorough with the material that is being delivered, and the quality of the material itself comes into question.
Can I teach Reformer Pilates without a Mat qualification?
No. A Pilates Mat qualification forms the basis of your Reformer course. You can always complete the Pilates Mat lectures and then follow on with your Pilates Reformer lectures, which will make the Reformer course seem a lot easier to complete.
Can I find employment at Pilates Dynamics upon completion of my Pilates Mat and/or Pilates Reformer Course?
Most definitely yes. Pilates Dynamics offers Internships as well as employment opportunities for Pilates Instructors.
When does the next Pilates Reformer Course start?
Our next Reformer course starts 11 April 2025.
Am I too old to be a Pilates instructor?
Regardless of your age, conditioning, or ability, it’s never too late to start your journey as a Pilates Instructor. There is good income to derive from being a great Pilates Instructor which can support your livelihood for years to come. • Benefits of Pilates: What Does Pilates Do to Your Body?

Benefits of Pilates: What Does Pilates Do to Your Body?

    1) Pilates defies gravity
The word “lengthen” is a term often used in Pilates. It is important for those concerned about aging gracefully. Gravity pulls our bones and skin down to the ground and is a major contributor to aging. It makes us look old, tired and defeated.

Pilates teaches the body to fight gravity using muscular control and uses it as a force to strengthen muscles instead of giving in to it. You learn to lengthen your spine and fight the forces of gravity, ultimately feeling taller and in more control. The bones realign in your body and your organs can work unimpeded and more efficiently. While gravity pulls you down, Pilates picks you up.

    2) Pilates keeps your brain active
The amount of brainpower required for an effective Pilates session could rival that of 3 cups of espresso. There are so many cues and precision techniques to remember that your brain needs to start building neural networks to keep up. As this practice continues, the mental processes evolve and graduate. This means that the earlier cues you learned will soon become inherent in the practice and new networks start to form. Science teaches us that we can build brainpower as we age (as opposed to simply “sustaining” it), and the right stimuli will encourage both halves of the brain to continue learning. That’s why Pilates is a MIND/BODY technique – a lot of thought and conversation between your mind and body must take place for an effective practice. Win/win for the Pilates practitioner.

    3) Pilates has your back and neck
Disc herniation, bulging discs, disc degeneration, spondylosis mess with the structure of the spine. And anyone who’s ever had their back failing on them knows that the simple act of walking suddenly becomes quite challenging. The back is designed for movement and thrives well when properly taken care of. Sitting in a chair all day or keeping the spine imbalanced with habitual or repetitive motion (think: playing golf) is torturous for the back and will mostly likely lead to potential problems. There are a huge number of muscles that support a healthy back which can help prevent the onset of age-related issues and injuries. So have no fear – play the 18 holes but balance yourself out before and afterward with a good Pilates session. Bonus – Pilates will improve your score.
    4) Pilates boosts your mind and body
Now with all this extra blood flow, efficient movement, and brain stimulation, you’ll find that you’ll start being stronger, standing straighter, and becoming more connected to your body. Chronic ailments might start to fade away, and you’ll find some hidden energy. These extra bonuses really start to boost your confidence, in and out of the studio. And after a period, these endorphins will make you believe you can accomplish anything. You might even start trying out or doing things you thought were once out of your reach because you know that your body will feel great and be strong doing it. It’s like you can really rely on your body to be constantly ready for whatever you want to do. So, you can take the leap knowing that your body will gladly keep up.

    5) Pilates is sexy
One look at a studio with equipment, and you might think you’ve entered some kind of medieval torture chamber. But you’ll quickly learn that those machines will become your best friends. Blood flow and efficient movement are wonderful for the sex drive, but the real bonus comes in two other parts. First, you’ll start to really learn about your body and how you can control and manipulate it to do what you want, including the pelvic floor muscles that help us control some reproductive musculature. Second, whether you work on machines or on the mat, the confidence you gain from Pilates truly permeates all boundaries. And you’ll find that it’s true for sexual confidence. Any insecurities will melt away with your exhales, and sex will take on a whole new meaning.
    6) Pilates is hard
There’s a saying: If Pilates is easy, you’re doing it wrong. It takes precision, control, and dedication. It’s hard work. But your body is your only true asset, and you’ll be rewarding yourself by committing to improve it. On the days you don’t do Pilates, your body will let you know its disappointment (via mysterious aches and pains).
So, take a deep inhale. Exhale it all out. And get ready to change your life.

  • Why Do a Pilates Course? 10 Good Reasons to Become a Pilates Instructor

Why Do a Pilates Course? 10 Good Reasons to Become a Pilates Instructor

Are you thinking of starting a career in teaching Pilates? You are probably already a passionate member of the practice. So why not turn it into a career or part-time job to supplement your income?
You are probably wondering if you can earn a living teaching Pilates? Yes, you certainly can.

We will give you the 10 best reasons to become a Pilates Teacher and you will more than likely recognize some of these reasons in yourself:

    1. You want to convince everyone you meet to try out Pilates.
This is an absolute must for people wanting to become a Pilates Instructor. You must love the practice.

    2. You are not enjoying your work or find yourself in a rut.
Work is not always fun, but you should not feel stuck in it. Work should be meaningful and challenging and you should be able to enjoy it. If not, it is time to consider a career change. Exercise is generally more fun than most jobs. You will be creating and writing programs and teaching classes to others for them to become stronger and more flexible. At the same time, it will challenge your skill to get others to perform the exercises correctly and with precision and control. Every client is different, and every class will be different, so becoming bored is not an option.

    3. You enjoy working with people.
This is another important requirement. You will be dealing with people all day long. Pilates Instructors are hands-on, encouraging, and motivating. We know it can be challenging to work with people all the time, but many Instructors find this an interesting challenge and one that is rewarding. Of course, you will also need to do administration and marketing in between, but that makes for a good mix.

    4. You need to find a more meaningful career.
If your current work does not leave you feeling fulfilled, it could be time for a change. The great thing about Pilates is that you are making a meaningful change in people’s lives. Besides, if you are unsure whether you should leave your job, you can always do Pilates part-time, before taking the big step.

    5. You are looking for a career that is more active and physical.
If sitting in front of a computer is not your thing, then working as a Pilates Teacher will provide an active career that is much healthier. It will deepen your own practice.

    6. Pilates is not a 9 to 5 job.
There is a lot of flexibility choosing to become a Pilates Instructor. If you need to be flexible and need to schedule work around your family, then becoming a Pilates Instructor might work for you.

    7. Are you considering a career within which you can grow?
Fitness is a growing industry. The fitness industry has seen significant growth and transformation over the years, with growth estimations of nearly 7.5% annually between 2022 and 2030. The fitness industry is experiencing rapid expansion due to a surge in health-conscious consumers and the proliferation of diverse fitness offerings. Pilates is part of this growth and shows no signs of slowing down.

    8. Are you a Personal Trainer, Bio kineticist, or Physiotherapist searching for something else to add to your skills?
If you are already in the fitness and health industry but are looking at ways to set yourself apart from every other personal trainer, bio kineticist or physiotherapist then Pilates is a great way to achieve this.

    9. Do you love learning and personal growth?
Whether you have a fitness qualification or not, Pilates Instruction is a great way to keep learning and challenging your mind and body. You will keep learning as science evolves.

    10. Do you want to earn a living doing something you love?
This is the most important question and if you love Pilates and want to share it with others and earn a living from it whilst it makes you feel good, then follow your passion. You can teach Pilates well into your 80’s.

So, what are your reasons for becoming a Pilates Instructor or adding Pilates to your current skills set?
This is ultimately your personal choice. To make that career move, you will need good reasons to motivate you. Does Pilates fit your goals and priorities for work and life? If so, then make a choice and don’t look back.
What qualification do I need to become a Pilates Instructor?
Pilates is not regulated, so licencing is not required. However, most studios need their Pilates instructors to be certified. Clients will also be looking at your certification and qualifications.
Becoming certified is not as expensive or as time consuming as you think. However, it depends on the program you chose and the time you have available to complete the certification.

It could take you 12 months to complete the basic Pilates Mat qualification, or it could take you 3 months. It all depends on how much time you have available to complete your practical hours and get yourself ready for the exams – it really is up to you.

Once you have a certification, you can look for a job at a Pilates studio or at a gym. You can also take the independent route and take on clients in your home or rent space at a gym or studio. This is a flexible career that allows you to shape it however you want.

What other qualification can I do once I have obtained the basic Pilates Mat course?
Pilates Reformer training is hugely popular overseas and in South Africa. It is the latest buzz word. Once you have obtained your basic Pilates Mat course, you can sign up for the Pilates Reformer course which will allow for more scope for growth and income.

Hello there, my name is Jane and I have been getting a lot of questions about my workout routine lately. So, considering it is now Bikini season, I thought I would tell you some of my favourite things that have kept me consistent in my Pilates journey while getting ready for Bikini and Speedo season of course!
    1. Getting a variety of classes

In my search for the perfect studio to suite my needs, I came across Pilates Dynamics Studio, and it has been such a great experience for me because they offer a variety of Pilates classes with different types of equipment. This is great because I get bored easily and I opt out of things, but they have kept me on my toes with different fun classes weekly and I am thoroughly enjoying myself.

    2. How will Pilates help me to tone my body?
The main aim is to condition the deeper, supporting muscles of your body to improve posture, balance, and coordination. Pilates is a full body exercise regime. Equipment-based Pilates includes specific big machines that works against spring-loaded resistance, including the ‘Reformer’, which is a moveable carriage that you push and pull along its tracks.

Speaking of the Reformer, Pilates Dynamics is well known for their Pilates Instructor Training Courses they run throughout the year and their next Pilates Intensive Reformer Course dates together with the rest of their well sought after Courses dates for 2024 are available.

    3. What kind of Pilates exercises will help me get Bikini ready?

Surprise truly is the best element of Humour in Pilates!!! Just like so many people, I used to think that you can only get great results by using the Pilates Large Equipment like Reformers, Towers, and the Pilates Wunda Chair. Over the past few months since I joined Pilates Dynamics, I have learnt that the biggest misconception about Pilates is that Mat Pilates cannot transform your body because a mixture of both did wonders for me!

    4. Can you get abs from Mat Pilates?

I am the living proof, and the answer is a strong YES!!! I toned my body and after a few sessions of me being very consistent, I started noticing the difference in my body and I decided not to stop there. I wanted the abs, and I got the abs!!

Pilates Dynamics is honestly one of the very few Pilates Studios that is fully equipped. They have a variety of equipment they use for your Mat classes in order to make sure that you fully engage and work on your core to build those ab muscles.

  • Barre Classes at Pilates Dynamics

    Barre Classes at Pilates Dynamics

For many of us, Pilates is a life-changing exercise method. If your exercise background has been the typical gym workouts focussed on strength and cardio training, and you are looking for an alternative full-body workout, then look no further than a Barre Class.

A Barre workout program is gaining popularity, recognition and followers. This fitness program is essentially a mixture of ballet-inspired exercises, Yoga and Pilates. The Barre method derives from the Lotte Berk Method founded in 1959 in London by its namesake, a German dancer looking to stay fit while nursing a back injury.

    WHAT IS BARRE WORKOUT?

Barre uses your own body weight for resistance and focuses on small, deliberate movements focussed on specific groups of muscles, specifically muscles that aren’t used in other workouts. Muscles are worked to the point of fatigue, and then stretched for relief. Proper form, body alignment and posture are emphasized, which in turn leads to an overall strengthening of core muscles and an aligned, lean body.

Aerobic exercise is also used at times during a Barre class to increase cardiovascular endurance and the body’s metabolism to burn calories and you will work up a sweat. Additional equipment like free weights, weighted balls, unstable props and soft balls are also used to intensify muscle recruitment and challenge.
Movements are functional for men and women as well as all ages and fitness levels. Movements improve balance and body awareness to build strong, lean, flexible and healthy bodies.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING A BARRE CLASS?

Do not be surprised if your legs are trembling and sweating during these classes as this is quite common and a sign that your muscles are working hard. Getting to the point of shaking means that you have worked the muscles to fatigue. If this sounds like your joints are under strain, do not be concerned. Even though the Barre Pilates classes are tough, it is easy on your joints and will prevent and reduce injuries and will improve your posture.
You will feel the muscle burn whilst burning serious calories and work up a sweat during a Barre class.

    DO I NEED ANY EQUIPMENT?

No equipment is needed. The studio has ballet barres. Pilates Dynamics Studio also has a variety of small equipment that will be used in addition to the ballet barre, like free weights, soft balls, weighted balls and balance equipment.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A BARRE CLASS?

    1. Increased flexibility. Borrowing from ballet and all the flexibility that dancers need, barre classes also can help improve your stretchiness. Some exercises involve mobility, particularly in the hips, with a fair amount of stretching.
    2. Increased muscle strength and tone. Any form of resistance training, weightlifting, and barre will increase muscle mass. The abs and back muscles will get fired up and you will sculpt a stronger, more defined core, arms and legs.
    3. Improved endurance. Barre workouts are all about endurance, form, and repetition You hold positions for a long time and exhaust reps, but with weights. Because you are spending a good amount of time in each shape to really wear out the muscles, you also can truly feel what part of your body you are supposed to be activating and strengthening.
    4. They’re gentle on joints. Barre classes are low impact, which can reduce the risk of injury and help if you are already injured. Many people are working with injuries and still want a solid physical challenge without feeling like they must modify everything. Barre is low impact as there is no jumping in a barre workout. That also makes it a great option for pre- and postnatal women.
    5. Better posture. Many of the moves in a barre class also target the abs and core, enabling you to work toward a stronger, more defined core, and you will be gaining solid strength to improve your posture, balance, and overall agility.
    6. Great for cross training. Even if your primary focus is on getting ready for a competitive race, a barre class can be a great form of cross training to maintain strength and well-rounded fitness.
    7. Increase Bone Density. Regular barre workouts can increase bone density, which can help prevent conditions like osteoporosis. They can also help you to avoid injury. The small isometric muscle movements used during barre classes build muscle strength without putting a strain on ligaments and tendons like other fitness training methods can.
